Best offroad 4x4 vehicles of all time

Just wondering what vehicles you people think are the best offroad vehicles of all time?

Personally I think the Toyota Landcruiser 70 and 100 series are the best practical all round offroader with decent road manners and argornomics(?).

I think the UAZ's are also quite capable offroad vehicles

dozer 12-23-2010 02:32 AM

how did you miss the landcruiser 80 series in that equasion?

Was the toughest landcruiser of them all and came with the 1hdt diesel motor which ruled the market for manny years.

The 70 series? dont you mean the 75 series? this was a very solid truck but suffered greatly because of its narrow wheel base and rough leaf suspension which really underperformed.

This would be my list based on reliabillity, performance, toughness and looks.

1. GQ patrol wagon or ute, 4.5 TD42 TD
2. 80 Series landcruiser 4.2 1HDT
3. GU nissan Patrol, 4.5 TD42 or RD28/ 3ltr
4. Toyota hilux 1985 through to 1996 when they went from leaf suspension
to IFS.
5. Landrover defender
6. Jeep JK, Wrangler ect
7. Unimog

And thats about it.

Thought so,

The reason nissan is at the top is because of its toughness.

It has the strongest driveline of all trucks and the biggest chassy. The Y60 GQ patrol actually uses a Truck box, diffs, driveline to give it the most reliabillity out of them all.

I have also owned most of the trucks above and now a nissan and can say it is by far the toughest most capable reliable 4wd of them all.

Even the 80 series landcruiser uses a small hilux rear diff in the front of the wagon for some reason which is one of the letdowns of the mighty 80 series landcruiser.

Interesting information, would love if you could compare the defender - cruiser - patrol - g wagon and possibly uaz 469, would be grately appreciated.
btw in terms of comfort, maintainace(simplicity-mechanical knowlegde needed - repair cost), durability, running cost, off road ability when stock
I'm not a fan of nissan so I never have a clue about that info.

SuzukiSamurai 12-27-2010 12:12 AM

I think you guys forgot the Suzuki Samurai. This is a tough little truck that is the most capable of all trucks you guys noticed.. It's also the one that is the easiest to rebuild. It isn't the strongest but it has decent parts for a real fair price. Especially already used parts. It's the shortest one with the less weight.
Check these following 4 videos of these Suzuki Samurais. I can't believe you guys just forgot about the Samurai. I know people think it's just a 'Samurai' but you'll be suprised of howmuch they can do!

yeah forgot about the suzuki. I was only thinking about big boys toys

Yeah i know they are capable but i wouldnt take one out bush too far away from help by myself.

Parts are too week especially when you run bigger tires and have a heavy foot.

puppy-v8 12-27-2010 05:53 PM

hahahaha, touched a nerve ey.

If my truck is so gay why did it just feature with a 6 page spread in Australias largest off road magazine... lol.

Only reason i can see that you would take so much offence is that you are actually gay... hahahahahahaha

Loosen up brother "or maybe i shouldnt say that to you:)"

We should all remember they are the best country in the world "insert sarcsim here" lol.

I also like how he turned a simple vehicle joke into a racism issue and attacks a whole country. im actually sitting here with a smile that he is so sensitive.

I should get a big stick so i can keep poking him lol

Once again where is a picture of your truck?

Your probably just a pimpily faced 15 year old with no idea that has only ever driven a 4wd in a game hahahaha.

6. Jeep JK, Wrangler ect

And thats about it.

I 100% agree with your 'list' above,
- I have owned the following...
1992 Mercedes G Wagon 320GE
1995 Nissan Safari GQ LWB 4.2TD
1994 Nissan Safari GQ SWB 4.2TD
2002 Toyota Landcruiser VX100 4.2TD
2006 Nissan Patrol 3.0TD
-- Safari - If it is about the mechanics and specifically the engine/drive train this is the way to go. I use the '94 SWB as my daily driver - it has done 1.3million k's and only had its transmission reconditioned once - other than that just regular oil changes. In my opinion this Nissan 4.2TD engine is one of the best 'utility truck engines' ever...just so damn dependable.
-- Landcruiser VX100 was an amazing truck too - in many ways superior to the Safari such as a lot more refined and very easy to live with as a daily driver as well as being very capable of road.
--The Mercedes G Wagen was a 'head turner' and awesome to own, beautiful build and overall quality. Possibly as tough as a Japanese truck but always felt very heavy and sluggish when off road - a dream car would be the 4.2TD Safari engine & trans in the G Wagen body...that would really be something!
-- 2006 Patrol 3.0TD - these receive plenty of negative press in on line forums and I only bought one because they are quite cheap to buy compared to Landcruiser. I think the problem with this truck is that because it's predecessor was so good it was almost destined to fail on that alone, it lives in its shadow. I have owned this for 3 years now, it has done 210,000k's and apart from lacking the grunt of a 4.2TD engine I honestly can't fault it.

That is my 2 cents worth :)
